As an American in the late 1800's, owning a farm was not too uncommon, especially if that farm was located in Mexico. At this time, though, Mexico was in the Porfirian Era (1876-1911). In this certain era, Mexico was being encountered by two very different cultures at the same time: the industrial, and the traditional. These distinctively separate cultures impacting Mexico made it as what can be described as â€Å"backwards† in a sense, as Mexico was practically regressing as the world around it was moving on to bigger and better things.Mexico was so behind that â€Å"many had concluded that Mexico had yet to advance beyond chipped rocks as utensils. † (p. 67). Mexico at this time had locked itself in a stagnancy of its own traditions. The people were simply too anxious towards newer technology to move ahead and replace what they had known for so long. In Mexico at this time, stones were used for nearly every operation executed by the natives. Women that would hand-grin d the meal for tortillas still used a stone roller and slab for the job.They would then take the tortillas and place them upon a hot rock, as stoves were unheard-of at this time. The houses that they lived in also represented the backwardness of the era, as they seemed to replicate that of an Aztec or early Spanish hut with its flat top and adobe construction. In these houses, the Mexicans lacked all types of furniture, even a bed. For sleep, they used what were called petates, which were simple mats to sleep on. They also did not possess any means of heating or cooling, so all resources that they had were to be utilized in many ways.As far as the implementation of new technology goes, Mexico was very stubborn to say the least. As written in the book, â€Å"In near disbelief, a New York Times reporter wrote that Mexicans scarcely understood the use of the wheel. † (p. 72), so it is not entirely difficult to believe that Mexico was still in an ancient lifestyle. Because of thi s lack of transportation technology, many Mexicans at the time would use mules as well as men to transport freight across distances.This was a huge representation of the stunted technological growth that Porfirian Mexico possessed. Another great vision of Mexico's poorly adaptive society was the plow. This plow was described as being â€Å"a long tree branch, with a crook, sometimes faced with an iron, serving as the plowshare. † (p. 72). It also is told to be ox-powered, hooked up to its horns, making it unreliable and at most times inefficient. It was also awfully bad for the ox, as it made the creature push and strain on its neck muscles.On the ranches that did however import plows from the United States, one handle would be removed to replicate the traditional tool that was still used, rather than learning to use the newer and better improved one. Other Agricultural tools were not used in Mexico either, further representing the stubbornness Mexicans possessed toward chang e. Wheat was still harvested by a sickle, rather than a smooth blade. The wheat was not caught by a cradle either, virtually creating more work for the Mexicans overall. No tools were used to thresh the wheat either.Instead, â€Å"the grain was threshed by spreading it in a corral and allowing the animals to trample it for two or three days. † (p. 73). By the time the process was complete, dirt and animal filth was mixed in with the product, making it very much unsanitary. Not only were these Mexicans stubborn to adapting the new technologies, they were hostile as well. After one hacendado had learned that the thresher machine was much more effective and practical, the village priest had declared that it was â€Å"possessed by the devil and forbade the peons to work with it.† (p. 73); the American owner of this machine had to have it exported out of the area to prevent it from being destroyed. Despite the unholy declarations of priests, many villagers naturally opposed using the machines because they left the straw â€Å"whole†. On top of this resistibility to change, the farmers who grew such crops were ignorant to the fact of rotating and resting the fields. They just did not understand the scientific ways that were upon them.One of the next biggest appearances of the ignorance and stubborn acts of Mexican workers at this time was the views they held on the basic tools of the Yankees. As the new technologies of shovels and wheelbarrows were being brought into Mexico, they were being completely disregarded. When Mexicans needed to transfer or transport the earth, they would use what was called a horn scoop, and dump their collected dirt into a leather bag for transportation rather than throwing shovelfuls into a wheelbarrow.An example of wheelbarrow use is told as the following: â€Å"one laborer working on the church loaded his wheelbarrow with bricks, lifted it onto his head, and trudged over to the masons. After emptying it, he replac ed the wheelbarrow on his head and returned to the brick pile for another load. † (p. 74). All means of irrigation were done by transferring the water by means of a pot or bucket. Sometimes other ways were implemented as well, but nonetheless, these was were too known to be dated back to ancient times.The simplicity of it was so neanderthal in style that its told that these methods of irrigation were derived from those used on the Nile hundreds of years before, and not improved on since. Mining as well was un-influenced by the evolving technologies, as the mines hardly differed from what they had been over past years. The workers would dig into the hillside, and use long poles, generally 8-10 feet in length, to escape in and out of the mine. The tools the actual miners utilized was a steel-tipped iron rod, rather than the contemporary pick of the modern age.These drillers, or barrateros, were known as the elite society of the underground, also being paid much better than other s. As far as the ore-transferring process went, it was very dangerous, in the fact of ascending up these wooden poles to the surface. Mexicans also sported yet another downfall, as they relied on rawhide as a crutch for and any all repairs. â€Å"Thongs yoked the plow to the ox, bound cargoes on the backs of mules, stitched together everything that could be laced, tied rails to fence posts, and held rafters in place.† (p. 76).That previous sent ence pretty much sums it up- the idea that â€Å"what a Mexican could not do with rawhide was not worth doing. † (p. 76). Mexicans had virtually eliminated the need for any sort of pins or nails in their society. However, though this rawhide-repairing technique was useful on many things, it would not be accepted let alone effective on machinery. Their means of repair through rawhide put them at a handicap had a repair been needed for any sort of machine, especially one made from cast iron.When a problem like this would emerge, the Mexicans would simply toss that machine aside and no longer worry about it. This furthermore reinforced the ignorance to technology that Mexicans sported. Mexico in this period of time was very much behind technologically. They did not induce change, nor did they embrace it if it was placed in front of them. They faced many disadvantages in the Porfirian Era because of this, but yet, they were not stagnant in their duties. The Mexicans, still using the ancient practices that have been long used by their ancestors, would get the job done.Their work ethic was definitely an admirable one, but the shame of it overall is to think that they could've gotten so much more done had they not been so single-minded toward new technologies. This obvious stubbornness sent them into the regression, or â€Å"backwardness† that they were known for at the time, strongly reinforced by the idea that â€Å"if it's not broken, don't fix it. † Eventually, though, Mexico at this time would be attacked by the Porfirian Liberals, who posted restrictions upon the church and seized lands in attempt to â€Å"modernize† the so very far-behind Mexicans.In response to the attacks, â€Å"these Mexicans under siege confronted modern life in the countryside and the city, and fought to preserve their customs†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (p. 88). Mexicans of this time were just not going to cave in to any foreign force, whether it be a change in technologie s, or a change in customs. They were very stubborn and strong-willed with their beliefs, regardless of who or what was threatening them. That clearly demonstrates why Mexico is not necessarily a place to implant new technologies, especially ones that attempt to improve on their own previous traditions.

On how she struggled to merely pay for her rent or even to get herself enough food to eat is something that a lot of Americans are actually experiencing, especially now that we are in the state of recession. If Ehrenreich had conducted her experiment in the present, I believe, she would have gotten a worse and more difficult experience. The state of America’s economy now is something far from promising—not only for Americans but also to everyone else throughout the globe. It can never be denied that whatever the state of a country’s economy is there will always be a greater percentage of people who belong to the base of the economic triangle. Those people are the ones who struggle to merely have a bed to sleep on at night or even food to eat for the day. They are the ones who push themselves to the limit—physically and mentally—just to survive. Back in 1998, America was considered as one of the best economical refuge of people from different countries. In 1998, 1-star motel rent rates of the US ranged from $13 to $20 a night, depending on the location of the motel and the services that were included with the rent, such as TV, telephone, security, etc. These motels usually were badly kept, needed serious repair and didn’t even provide the basic needs of the usual customer. These were the types of motels that a usual low-wage homeless worker goes to stay. In the present, 1-star motel rates are actually much steeper compared to before, ranging from $55 to $90 a night, with the fact that less motels are available now due to the increasing instability rate of America’s economy. Given those facts, if Ehrenreich would have conducted her experiment in the present, her chances of finding a cheap will-do place would be smaller. She’d have to struggle into either working extremely hard to pay the rents of the most available motel she could find or stay nights in her car for the moments that she didn’t have a place to stay. Of course, Ehrenreich’s chances of surviving in the present would vary greatly depending on her wages. With the reality that wages are a bit higher nowadays compared to before, Ehrenreich would still be having a hard time. In 1998 to 2000, minimum wages were around $6 to $7 an hour and having only one job is not enough to pay for anyone’s monthly rent—add to that food, medics, gas and all the other basic necessities. During the experiment, Ehrenreich struggled from being a waitress to a housekeeper to a dietician and in every month that she had her experiment, she always had to have two jobs just for her to pay the monthly rent. As time goes by, the rich multiply in number, twice as much for the poor and like what Ehrenreich said in her novel, low cost apartments and motels are being replaced by expensive condominiums and apartments, forcing people to rent spaces that they cannot even afford with merely just one or two jobs. If Ehrenreich were to conduct her experiment in the present, she would likewise be forced to rent a space that’s either near her workplace or quite available, which however would force her to choose between extremely expensive and quite affordable. According to Time Magazine, the hourly minimum wage was increased by . 85 cents back in 2007. This happened to be a relief for some people who were working in companies that somewhat considered their employees for good compensation. In some small businesses, however, like Laundromats, Supermarkets and Salons, not much change were seen. Employees who worked under such industries had wages that averaged to only $3 per hour. Given this scenario plus the sudden spike of unemployment in America due to fluctuating prices of basic necessities we could pretty much say that Ehrenreich’s chance of survival drops to nearly impossible. Simply put, Barbara Ehrenreich’s experiment would definitely have different results if she had conducted it in the present. Given the facts of unemployment, fluctuating prices and lack of available resources, Ehrenreich’s chance of survival would be less compared to before. Today is simply a much harder time to live. We are living in a world that’s crueler than before. Surviving is much more difficult, living is truly tiring. America is now a different country, offering hope to some and none to almost everyone. Neglecting the Complexities Essay Global warming is the heating up of the earth’s surface which causes such an increase in the average temperature that sums up to the change in the earth’s climate. This can be attributed to the man-made greenhouse gas concentrations as in the greenhouse effect. The Earths climate changes in response to external forcing, including variations in its orbit around the Sun (orbital forcing), changes in solar luminosity, volcanic eruptions, and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The detailed causes of the recent warming remain an active field of research, but the scientific consensus is that the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases due to human activity caused most of the warming observed since the start of the industrial era. This attribution is clearest for the most recent 50 years, for which the most detailed data are available. Some other hypotheses departing from the consensus view have been suggested to explain most of the temperature increase. One such hypothesis proposes that warming may be the result of variations in solar activity. We can just imagine how much of this heat would come from the environmental pollution as the toxic wastes emitted by factory chimneys, production of plastics, chemicals from hairsprays and the like. These innovations that are both detrimental to human health and environment, especially in times where we have denuded green fields and lack of the maintaining and sustaining of the forestry. The current times would show much indifference from the human population who as learned to embrace the short term aesthetic beauty and comfort that this modernism offers to the industry. This apathy should then be addressed immediately especially at these times when the grave effects and destructions of the global warming are so imminent not only in the human health but most especially with the dwindling of natural resources. Despite the notable efforts of some groups and organizations, one cannot help the passive undertaking of such a serious matter by the higher percentage of the human population. One should realize the horrendous effects that could follow with further negligence to such an alarming state of nature. The anticipated shift of climate because of global warming has the biggest possibility of having irreversible effects at both the continental and global scales which prove to be truly devastating. Though the actual materialization of such projected effects remain controversial, the foreseen outcomes include the impeded ocean circulation which is responsible for the transportation of the warm water to the North Atlantic, The wiping out of Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets, intensification of droughts, the wildfires out of heatwaves, severing storms, the speeding up of global warming brought about by the carbon cycle feedbacks in the terrestrial biosphere, and the exhaust of the terrestrial carbon from permafrost regions and methane from hydrates in coastal sediments. The United States National Academy of Sciences has warned, Greenhouse warming and other human alterations of the earth system may increase the possibility of large, abrupt, and unwelcome regional or global climatic events. . . . Sea level is generally expected to rise 18 to 59 cm (7. 1 to 23. 2 inches) by the end of the century. The extreme weather caused by global warming could lead to effects as that of Extratropical storms which is partly dependent on the temperature gradient that is predicted to weaken in the northern hemisphere as the polar region warms more than the rest of the hemisphere. Because of the warm climate there would be an increase in the evaporation which will then cause heavier rainfall as our world is a closed system, which further leads to erosion. This is very detrimental to tropical areas which may lead to desertification due to deforestation. It was then predicted to have an average of 2. 8% catastrophic storms in every 1% increase in annual precipitation. RESOLUTION Because of this awareness on the projected negative effects of global warming it has brought much concern to the human population which brought certain political advocacies into the proposition of ways to eradicate and alleviate the status of our ecosystem as greatly affected by the global warming. They are now promoting extensive means and way into advocating the social awareness of such horrendous effects to our world. The effects and consequences of present acts my not be super visible or flatly exposed to the human eye, but the projected image of how bad things can turn out to be is now shown through studies such as that of one as reported to UN by Stephen Mwakifwamba, national coordinator of the Centre for Energy, Environment, Science and Technology with regard to the Tanzanian government’s climate change. In the past, we had a drought about every 10 years, he says. Now we just dont know when they will come. They are more frequent, but then so are floods. The climate is far less predictable. We might have floods in May or droughts every three years. Upland areas, which were never affected by mosquitoes, now are. Water levels are decreasing every day. The rains come at the wrong time for farmers and it is leading to many problems. Greg Holland, director of the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, said on April 24, 2006, The hurricanes we are seeing are indeed a direct result of climate change, and that the wind and warmer water conditions that fuel storms when they form in the Caribbean are, increasingly due to greenhouse gases. There seems to be no other conclusion you can logically draw. Holland said, The large bulk of the scientific community say what we are seeing now is linked directly to greenhouse gases. The Association of British Insurers has stated that limiting carbon emissions would avoid 80% of the projected additional annual cost of tropical cyclones by the 2080s. The cost is also increasing partly because of building in exposed areas such as coasts and floodplains. The ABI claims that reduction of the vulnerability to some inevitable effects of climate change, for example through more resilient buildings and improved flood defenses, could also result in considerable cost-savings in the long term. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but there is ongoing political and public debate worldwide regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences. All of these warnings and plans can only be fully realized once each and every individual take a serious look at this alarming earth condition; then personally taking the initiative to involve them selves and act in ways to the promotion of lessening all these harmful sources of global heat. We can take a start from the use of earth-friendly materials such as the recycling method or even the use of healthy vehicular fuels. There are numerous ways to make use of the available alternatives or probably to explore new and better ways of catering materials for human services left to be seen. Nanotechnology based Drug Delivery Systems Richard Chen Introduction In the past century, nanotechnology has been a prominent theme for many science fiction writers. However, thanks to recent developments in chemistry and manufacturing, we are now able to bring things that were once unimaginable into fruition. The field of nanotechnology refers to the research, development and the production of materials under the size of 100 nanometers (nm). Over the past decade, the scientific community has experienced a boom in the research and development of nanotechnology. New technologies are being released with thousands of dollars of funding behind them. In this paper, the benefits, disadvantages, applications, governmental policies and recommendations of nanotech based drug delivery will be discussed. Overview At the forefront of the nanotechnology revolution lies in the field of nanomedical drug delivery. Nanomedical drug delivery is the concept of using minute nanomaterials (NM) to act as carrier substances for drugs. These nanocarriers will then be injected into the bloodstream and deposit drugs at specific cells. Compared to conventional drugs which target on a macro scale, nanocarriers are able to target on the micro scale, leaving neighbouring healthy cells unharmed. This precision will ultimately lead to benefits such as reduced drug dosages and reduced side effects. When tested in the lab, these particles have shown a high degree of success within lab animals. Currently, several forms of suitable nanocarriers exist. The most prevalent ones include nanocrystals, various forms of organic nanoplatforms (such as liposomes) and inorganic platforms, such as gold nanoparticles. Next, the benefits of nanotechnology will be discussed. Benefits Nanotechnology based drug delivery systems are able to deliver a wide range of benefits to the human body, increase the effectiveness of conventional drugs and eliminate the short falls of conventional methods. As mentioned before, nanocarriers are able to target specific cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells alone. The cause of this phenomenon is attributed to the enhanced Permeability and retention effect (EPR). (Bamrungsap, et al, 2012) Molecules who possess the EPR property have a tendency to accumulate at specific cancerous cells, leaving normal healthy cells largely alone. Indirectly, EPR can be attributed to a reduction in drug dosage, reduced side effect intensity, enhanced efficacy and reduced toxicity. (Bamrungsap et al, 2012) Another benefit of nanocarriers compared to conventional drugs is that their physical properties such as size, surface area, and functionality can be easily modifiable. This is seen nanocarriers based on liposomes. In addition to being easily mo difiable, liposomes are known for their ability to reduce side effects, toxicity and reducing drug clearance. (Bamrungsap et al, 2012) Nanocarriers are also able to be adapted to release drugs depending on environmental triggers. These environmental triggers can vary from physical (temperature), chemical or biological signals. Commonly seen in polymeric nanoparticles, this property allows drugs to remain inert unless they are activated by an environmental trigger. Hence, they only activate when they are required. (Bamrungsap et al, 2012) Nanoparticles such as gold nanocarriers are able to act as drug â€Å"reservoir† (Bamrungsap et al, 2012). This allows drugs to have a slow release into the targeted area. Finally, nanocarriers such as liposomes have the ability to isolate drugs away from the environment. This allows for more efficient drug delivery as the drug will not be carried away by other bodily fluids. (Bamrungsap et al, 2012) Through the application of nanotechnologic al drug delivery, we can expect to see difficult to treat diseases such as cancer to be significantly less invasive, more tolerable, and more treatable to the patient. In turn, with better survival prospects for the world’s number 4 most deadly disease, (WHO, 2014) we could expect to see a sizable increase in the average human lifespan. In the next session, the risks and disadvantages of nanotechnology will be discussed. Risks/Disadvantages Despite nanotechnology being vastly beneficial to the individual and society, there are extreme risks involved with every new technology. Nanotechnological based drug carriers are no exception. In recent years, with the rapid development of nanotechnology, the field of nanotoxicology has also developed in order to study the toxicity of nanoparticles toward organisms. (Bamrungsap et al, 2012) Nanoparticles differ greatly from the largely harmless micron sized particles. Nanoparticles have been linked to changed body distributions and triggering of blood clots. In addition, nanoparticles have been linked to more traditional particle related illnesses such as inflammation and lung cancer. However, nanoparticles are significantly more difficult to remove from the body and can also cause mitochondrial damage, platelet aggression, and cardiovascular diseases. (Jong Borm, 2008) In addition to broad nanoparticle risks, various other nanoparticles also have concerns regarding their safety. One such concern is the potential for cadmium containing quantum dots to release free Cd2+ ions. (Jong Borm, 2008)These ions have been linked to large amounts of cell death when in vitro studies. Another concern is the possibility for Cationic nanoparticles (gold and polystyrene) to cause hemolysis, blood clotting and colon carcinoma in lab rats. Anionic nanoparticles, in contrast, are not known to be toxic. When in high doses, both Anionic and Cationic nanoparticles are both poisonous to the blood brain barrier (BBB). (Jong Borm, 2008) Similar to cationic and anionic particles, some forms of silica would result in a reduction of cell viability while other forms of silica are rendered to be non-toxic. (Jong Borm, 2008) Other potentially poisonous nanoparticles include carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and Dendrimers. (Jong Borm, 2008) It is clear that no two nanoparticles have the same properties. Hence, it is key for researchers to analyze each nanoparticle on a case-by-case basis. The final concern is the ability for nanoparticles to contaminate the environment. Owing to their small size, nanoparticles are exceedingly difficult to remove. When nanoparticles are introduced into the water supply, their behavior is relatively unknown. (Wrigth, n.d.). However, nanoparticles do have the tendency to bond with water molecules and porus media. They resist removal when industrial purification is used and whey deposited in soil, they tend to attract other nanoparticles towards them. This is likely to cause marine die offs due to them ingesting toxic nanoparticles. In addition, some studies have shown that the at certain pH levels, there is increased nanoparticle deposition levels. When nanoparticles enter the air, they behave similar to gasses. They rapidly disperse causing a wide area of contamination. When inhaled in, these particles behave very similarly to how asbestos behaves in the lungs. (Wrigth, n.d.) Hence, before nanotechnology can be widely introduced, extens ive testing should be conducted to mitigate any potential risks involved. Current and Future Applications Currently, nanocarriers are still considered to be in their infancy. They are too unstable for use and their behavior in humans is also completely unknown. Despite that, in the near future, nanocarriers will be capable of treating a great deal of human ailments with minimal invasiveness. For example, nanocarriers that are coated with the membrane of a red blood cell will be able to circulate around the body for a longer time. (2 days) (Boysen, n.d.) This longer time will provide the nanoparticle more time to attach to cancerous cells. Another application of nanocarriers is to use nano-sized silicon wafers and allowing the wafer to lodge inside the tumor. UV light is then focused upon the tumor, activating the silicon wafers, effectively killing tumor cells. (Roberts, n.d.) Another application for nanoparticles is for treating heart disease. Nanocarriers are able to attach to damaged arteries and apply drugs specifically to that area. Finally, nanotechnology is able to treat for diabe tes by releasing insulin depending on environmental triggers. (Boysen, n.d.) Perhaps what could be considered to be the holy grail of nanocarriers is the passage through the BBB. Passage through this barrier means access to the brain. With this passage, treatment for brain tumors can be less invasive and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and ALS could potentially have a cure in sight. (Jong Borm, 2008) Governmental Regulation Currently, in Canada, the development of nanotechnology falls under the regulation of 6 legislations. These regulations are: Canadian Environmental Protection Act Food and Drugs Act Food additive Regulations Medical devices Regulations Natural Health products Regulations Cosmetic Regulations (Government of Canada, 2014) The supervision of the use and production of nanoparticles falls under the responsibility of Health Canada and Environment Canada. The role of Environment Canada is to evaluate the ecological impact a nanoparticle will have while Health Canada is responsible for evaluating the risks a particle has on human health. (Government of Canada, 2014) A regulatory framework for Nanoparticles does not exist as of right now. However, a 2-phase plan is currently being discussed. The first phase of the plan involves the continued partnership with various international organizations such as ISO and OECD to create a standardization. This phase also involves the notification of the public and various industries. Simultaneously, Voluntary information and mandatory information submission will occur. The purpose of this is to build a strong framework on the development of nanotechnology. During voluntary information submission, information is remains confidential under section 313 of the CEPA. If manda tory information submission were to occur, they would fall under the jurisdiction of sections 46 and 71. These require the company to not only submit the required documents but also to answer potential questions to the best of their ability. Finally, legislative amendments will be made the CEPA in order to suit nanotechnology better (Environment Canada,Health Canada, 2007). In phase 2, the adoption international standardizations will occur. ISO/TC 229 will be applied into law. In addition, monitoring for Significant New activities will occur. (sNAC) a sNAC is defined as â€Å"a significantly greater quantity or concentration of the substance in the environment† or a significantly different manner or circumstances of exposure to the substance† (Environment Canada,Health Canada, 2007). If any substance meets this criteria, they would be deemed as toxic under CEPA 1999. The current regulations in place are evidently not enough for the rapidly developing nature of nanotechn ology. However, if the framework is implemented, (in addition to the recommendations of ISOTC 229) it should be meet all the demands of nanotechnology satisfactorily. On the international level, there are several organizations in charge of overseeing the development of nanotechnology. One such group is the OECN working party on nanotechnology. This group is in charge of addressing the political, scientific, technological, and innovation related aspects of nanotechnology. (Government of Canada, 2014) Another group is the OECD working party Manufactured Nanomaterials. This group is responsible for addressing issues of health and environmental impact caused by the manufacture of nanomaterials. (Government of Canada, 2014) Finally, the International organization for standards Technical Commission (ISO/TC) is responsible for developing a set of nomenclature specific to nanomaterials. This is done under the bill ISOTC 229. Addressing the problem of nomenclature will identify gaps in knowledge and identify the need to invest more in nanotechnology. In addition, ISOTC 229 will make it easier to facilitate the exchange of legal documents regarding nanomate rials. (ISO/TC, 2011) Public Perception Public perception is currently a key factor in the acceptance of nanotechnology in society. Currently, it is assumed that the average civilian has low knowledge of nanotechnology. In surveys conducted by the Woodrow Wilson in 2006, 42% respondents said that they did not know anything about nanotechnology. When the same study was conducted again in 2009, 37% of respondents indicated no knowledge of nanotechnology. In contrast, 24-31% of respondents indicated a high degree of knowledge in nanotechnology. (Besley, 2010) In another study, the majority of respondents chose â€Å"[nanotechnological] benefits outweigh the risks† between 3 choices. The other two choices were â€Å"benefits will equal the risks† and â€Å"risks outweigh the benefits†. (Besley, 2010) Contrary to many new technologies, nanotechnology has been reported in a positive light in the press. Studies done in 2004 have shown that the technological benefits of nanotechnology have been more frequently reported. The risks and disadvantages have been shown to be rarely reported. (Besley, 2010) Cost As with any new technology, the initial costs are expected to be high. However, as mass production occurs and inefficiencies in the production like are smoothened out, it can be assumed that the price of nanocarriers will drop drastically. According to the United States National Nanological Initiative, the impact of nanotechnologies is expected to reach a $2.4 billion by 2015. (National Nanotechnological Initiative, n.d.) Conclusion As evidenced from this paper, the benefits of nanotechnological are substantial. In the near future, they can developed to treat cancer and can potentially treat incurable diseases such as dementia with direct cell targeting. However, the risks of such new technologies cannot be ignored. As stated before, nanocarriers have been directly related to be toxic towards biological organisms. In addition to several risks, a lack of legislation and international standardization causes the development of nanoparticles to be unregulated. However, this is no reason to stop the development of nanotechnology. In contrast, this is a reason to invest even more into the field of nanotechnological based drug delivery to see what the future unlocks. Although there currently are several side effects associated with then, it is important to keep in mind that this field is in its infancy. With correct government legislation and support, drug delivery based nanotechnology can yield great benefits, ultimat ely extending the human lifespan and raising the human standard of living. With the growing number of internet users participating in movie piracy, this creates a network of users who no longer need to go the movie theatre or video store to watch a movie. Movie piracy has grown enormously in the past few years making it easier than ever to find box office releases with the simple click of a button. This creates a world where it is okay to steal billions of dollars from movie producers, because most of those participating in piracy see nothing wrong with it. Although there are consequences for downloading copyrighted content, it is nearly impossible to prosecute each user who is downloading a particular movie. Instead of relying on punishing those who are downloading the content, it is most important to make this content unavailable getting rid of this problem altogether. In a recent survey conducted on 3600 internet users in nine countries, it was reported by the Motion Picture Association of America that twenty-four percent of internet users have downloaded a movie over the internet, and seventeen percent of those who hadn’t said they expect to start within the next year (Pruitt). Just about any internet user can easily find and download a movie within a few hours by typing its name into a search engine. With this method being more convenient and less costly than going to the movie theatre, it should not be a surprise that so many people are doing it. â€Å"Only two years ago, it took 72 days to get a highly watchable version of "Finding Nemo" online.† (Hernandez) Today, in the world of movie piracy this would rarely happen though. Most box office releases are available online within a few days or even hours of the box office release. â€Å"Last summer's blockbuster "Spider-Man 2," for example, was downloadable in first-rate form within seven hours of its premiere to the public†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Hernandez).
